Hotel Villa Honegg

The Fancy Hotel

After exploring Zurich and a full day of hiking, we decided to treat ourselves by staying at a fancy and luxurious hotel (after all it’s our honeymoon). I’ve been wanting to go to Switzerland for a long time and ever since I saw a travel video with an infinity pool that had an amazing view facing the great Swiss Alps, I knew it was an absolute must that we had to stay at Hotel Villa Honegg. We soon learned that booking any hotel in Switzerland (with reasonable location and affordability) has to be done a few months in advance. But even with booking so far in advance, all the most reasonably priced rooms where fully booked.

This 5-star hotel only has 23 rooms, some of which face the lake and the rest face the Alps. We picked the Superior Room which faces the lake and is one of the bigger suites but it was the cheapest option available. Staying at a room like this is as you would expect, quite expensive, but again being our honeymoon, we decided to bite the bullet and go for it.

From Zurich to the hotel

On the morning of our trip to Hotel Villa Honegg we were excited to begin our journey as getting there is a bit of an adventure. Given the number of train transfer’s needed to get there, if you call the hotel in advance, they will pick you up at the bottom of the mountain (Final transit stop) at an agreed upon time. Everything was on track until we got off the wrong stop and we had to drag our luggage to meet the driver on the next block. It was scorching hot, there were no shade, and it was a long walk. All of a sudden, we saw a Mercedes van stop across the street and the driver got out and waved at us! He found us! We hopped on the van with excitement and he drove us from the base of the mountain to the top where the hotel resides. As we looked out the window, amazed by the view, we both agreed that it was a good thing he found us because there was no way we could have hiked to the top of the mountain in the heat and with our luggage!

Great hospitality

Finally we arrived in front of the hotel and was greeted by the hostess, she checked us in and showed us to our room. When she brought us to the doorstep of our room, our driver opened the door from the other side with his welcoming hands open wide like what you would see in the movies or in commercials. The hostess also made a brief introduction about the hotel and amenities and said everything in the mini fridge is free of charge (jackpot!). We quickly looked outside our balcony and we were just floored by the view that was in front of us.

After a full day of traveling, Chris and I quickly changed into our swim suits, put on the hotel’s bathrobes and headed down to the pool. On our floor, there is a separate secret elevator (that looks just like any other room door) which takes you directly to the pool. When we arrived at the pool there was complimentary teas & sodas and lounge chairs overlooking the view. It’s like heaven. We will let the photos speak for itself.

After spending the whole afternoon in the pool, we finally decided to get get ready for dinner. We headed to the hotel restaurant which was outside and we both ordered the steak which was phenomenal. We enjoyed our dessert out on the restaurant’s outdoor lounge and watched the sunset.

At night, as we were getting ready to sleep on our most comfy king size bed, I decided to look out our balcony to see if the sky was clear for some star gazing. There were a few clouds but the sky was mostly full of stars. I quickly took out my tripod and decided to brave the outdoors to take some photos in the mosquito infested countryside. I stayed for half hour to stargaze and it was just the best feeling in the world.

The next morning we had a complimentary breakfast (another glorious meal) and with our remaining time, we walked around the grounds making our saddest faces as we contemplated why we didn’t book 2 nights at the hotel. We eventually headed back down the mountain for our next destination – Grindelwald.
