Neuschwanstein Castle

Road Trip to Fussen

Is order to get to Fussen, we decided to rent a car and get a taste of the German country side via the autobahn. We rented a Mercedes, but ended up with a fully loaded Mini Cooper. We were disappointed at first, but all the bells and whistles of the Mini Cooper and suprisingly responsive car handling, we were glad to be driving the Mini.

The German country side was predictably beautiful. Despite the high speeds on the roads, all drivers were skilled and respectful or people’s space. A far cry from the disrespectful, ignorant and brutish drivers you get in the GTA.

Fussen was a small charming town that we wish we had more time to explore, but the streets were packed with cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops steeped in history and tradition. A lot of the most well-known restaurants happened to be closed the day we visited so we had to settle on the second stringer restaurants. I finally got to eat a currywurst but it was unfortunately disappointing. Hannah ended up having one the best cappuccino’s she ever had in her life which was from a small Italian coffee shop.

Neuschwanstein Castle is a bit of a trek to get to. Its onto of a pretty steep hill and you get there either by horse carriage or walking. Hannah has a severe allergic reaction to horses so we had to hike to the top but was able to see a lot of cool vistas along the way.

We attended the 20-minute tour which gave us a brief history of Ludwig II of Bavaria - the king and the castle itself. The craftsmanship of everything inside was magnificent and detailed oriented. During our tour of Neuschwanstein Castle, you're not allowed to take any photos so you would have to do some Google searching to see the interior of the castle.

A tourist favourite suspension bridge gives you a stunning view of the countryside and the castle and is a popular spot for group photos.

Heading back to the hotel after some long hikes, resting with some orange themed pop’s is the way to go. Fanta in general by the way is better in Germany. They must use a different mix for the pop over there. If Fanta tasted as good as it does in Germany here at home, it would definitely be a more popular drink.
